Elected Officials - What Do They Owe Us?

They are OUR Public Servants

One of the greatest things about the way the Founders of the United States set up the functioning of our government was the idea that the government acts as our servant. Some will argue, and I tend to agree, that we are not a true Democracy. Indeed, we are, in my humble opinion, a Republic, and that means to me that we elect officials who are to represent us in the halls of our government.

So, the President, Vice President, every member of Congress and all other people who stand for and are elected to public office, are indeed supposed to be working for us.

The most important, and if I may use the word, sacred, documents of our nation all speak to the ideals of liberty and the subservience of the government to the will of the People; That is, People with a capital P.

This government as we have come to see it either stands or falls solely upon the will of We the People. If we participate and demand excellence from our leaders, if we hold them to a higher standard because they are OUR public servants, then the ability of any one of them to try to get away with breaking the law will be greatly reduced.

If, however, we act like sheep and allow our leaders to act as if we work for them, things will go badly awry.

In my humble opinion, we have generally been sheep as of late. Things done by elected and their choices of unelected officials have, also in my opinion, broken the covenant between the governed and the public servants we send to represent us.

Our founders stated that when a government no longer represents the people being governed, then the people have the God-given right and duty to do something drastic to remedy that situation. In the 1770's that remedy was revolution and war.

Today, how should we reply to the harm done to us by the people we send to act as our public servants? What would people such as George Washington say about the public servants in our government in 2008? Would he be proud and tell us how lucky we are to have such noble and honest souls to lead our nation to future greatness? Would he applaud the actions of people such as Alberto Gonzales and Dick Cheney?

Or would he, as I suspect, chide us for allowing things to get so badly out of control? Would they tell us that we need to act responsibly and demand greatness from our leaders? Would he tell us, as others back then said, that leaders subserviant to politicla parties could never truly be public servants, servants acting with the good of We the People in mind?

It doesn't matter if we are Republicans or Democrats, Greens or Libertarian, or of any other party, or not aligned with any party at all - there is something rotten in the United States today, something that demands of each and every patriot to stand up and be counted.

I am a Air Force veteran and I truly want to love and be proud of my country. There are indeed many great things we have done and are doing in the world today, but we are also slowly falling into the grip of special interests and people who do not have our best interests in mind. I speak not only of politicians, but also of those who hold influence over our elected leaders. I speak also of ourselves, for we, ultimately, hold or fail to hold the true power in this nation.

If we truly are the government, as the Founders intended, then we have no one but ourselves to blame if the government fails to act responsibly.

I for one do not agree that lobbyists and special interest groups trump my position as citizen, voter and participant in the government of the United States of America. I, like you, alone and by myself, am infinitely much more important than any special interest group. At least, that is how I see it, because my Constituion and BIll of Rights tells me so.

If it is different, if we no longer believe those precious documents to hold sway over our government, then tell me so, and I will do as George Washington did and demand that things be changed. I will wage a war of words to try to point out what is foul in this great nation; what needs to be done to restore power to We the People.

And as a modern day Patriot, one of millions across the land, and as a citizen who votes in each election, again one of millions across the nation, and as one who like you has rights and liberties, as well as responsibilities, I demand that our government remember that We the People are the only reason they sit where they are in Washington D. C., and that our business is the ONLY business they need consider when enacting laws.

I don't want lip service - I don't want to be patronized - I want the elected leaders to be put on notice that I, along with millions of other citizens, am angry, on guard and ready to do everything I can to restore the basic tenents of our government to where they belong - inthe hand of We the People. I will no longer allow any person to lie to me and tell me that they know best.

If they do otherwise then they have given us every excuse and every right to overthrow the status quo, to upset the applecart and create or recreate a government that truly, as Lincoln said, is "of the People, by the People and for the People," so that it "shall not perish from the earth".

If they fail to uphold the law and represent We the People, then they are, in my opinion, traitors. That is not easy for me to say, because like many of you, I want to believe that all is good and that all is right. But my eyes and ears and every sense of patriotism in my soul tell me that things are far from being all right.

I hope you will read this with an open mind and understand that you, and me, and all of us, are the government of the United States. It is ours to keep, or ours to throw away, and whichever action we take, the survival of our government rests solely upon our shoulders.

Our leaders are there to serve us, and if they fail in that regard, it is our right, and more importantly our duty, to make sure they do not remain in office.

If that means removing them either through the ballot box or by impeachment, the Constitution and other laws of the land give us the right to make that happen. Search your conscience, learn about your rights and responsibilities, and then act as the Founders of this nation would have done - do what is right and good.

Being a concerned citizen is neither easy nor simple. Much is demanded of us, and if we fail to do our duty, the nation as we revere it will not stand.

Nice article and you are right on the money!

Many of our so called servants disobey the law (Constitution) and should be held accountable. There are many examples if one just reads the Constitution.

Unfortunately that won't happen until the people wake up and find the truth and do their own homework. People need to question what they've been taught politically and get past what they are being fed by the mainstream media.

So what do they owe us? First an apology for the damage they have cause over the years. Then start doing the right things for the good of the country while putting their egos and wallets aside.

Joer4x4, thanks for the comment. I remember once a poll done that showed people thought their own representatives were good, but every other one was bum and an idiot. I like my current Representative Bill Foster, but I disliked Dennis Hastert, who was our Rep in Congress until he resigned.

BeatsMe - yes, in truth you are right, but as for the original intent, they were entering public service and were called public servants. I see the irony of it all, as you do. Thanks!

And now for something completely the same!

I think that only the rich can now successfully run for office. While being rich s no crime and certainly no reason for one not to run for office, what about inclusion of those of us who have great ideas but can't and won't get major party backing? While running for local office in a town or city may depend more on name recognition and how many people you get to know personally, running even for city dog catcher is far too expensive for the average person.

Why should people without excessive financial means be excluded from being a candidate? Who speaks for the homeless and the poor? Rich people? What does George Bush or John Kerry or John McCain know about being poor? I even wonder if barack Obama knows that much about it, even though his roots were closer to most of us than other candidates in recent memory.

As much as I disliked Reagan, his roots were simple and dirt common, as were Bill Clinton's. Both, however, seemed to forget their roots once money and power were within their reach.

Only the rich can run for office? Oh yeah, it's called The McCain-Feingold-Cochran Campaign Reform Bill.

The Constituion is very clear on elected officials. It gives no power to any individual. Article VI (last paragraph) and Admendment X take care of this nicely. The Constitution also lays out the qualifications for office.

Digging a little deeper, I don't think Obama has a clue. If he did he left it behind long ago.

So, Joer4x4 - do you support McCain? Or are you looking for an alternative to the Republican-Democrat hegemony? I have a friend who backs Bob Barr. I have to admit I couldn't stand him as a member of Congress, but he has said some interesting things now that he is running as a Libertarian. Of course he has no chance to win.

There are some points the Libertarians propose that I could support. I also like some of the Green party ideas. My greatest problem is that I am angry because it seems as if none of our elected officials really get the message - I think that even if they have a clue, they have to sell their souls to get elected.

I often wonder if we need to revisit how we elect our president and congress, in order to get more voices of people who do not agree with either major party. Would a parliamentarian system work better? I wonder......

Have you checked what our Alaskan Governor is doing? Shaking up things she is. It almost makes you want to cry tears of joy. She is honestly for the Alaskan people and she sure has felt the heat from the old admin who were used to profiting from Alaskans.  It's the first time in my life that I actually felt proud of who serves us.   She needs our prayers though.  It takes energy to fight for what you believe in and she believes in the Alaskan people. 

One of her long-time neighbors (Kaylene Johnson) who lives down the street from her wrote a book, "Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned Alaska's Political Establishment Upside Down," published by Epicenter Press. I picked it up in the airport during a layover recently.  If you interested maybe you can find it on ebay or some other commerce site.  If not here's the publisher address from the inside jacket. It says you can order single copies. Epicenter Press, PO 82368, Kenmore, WA 98028.  $19.95 plus $5.00 for shipping, also $2.00 tax if you're a WA resident. Am I a supporter?  You bet.  I first got a gander at her at the Governor's Ball when she was elected.  There were 5 Inaugural Balls  around the state.  That was a first.  I was a hat check girl.  Didn't lose one coat. Best fun I'd had in a long time.

Sarah isn't rich by a very long shot. The people who love what she represents put her in office. In fact she turned down many monetary offers and basically did a grassroots campaign with hammer, nails, wood and homemade cardboard placards for campaign signs. She wanted everything on the up and up and lots of transparency.

Babbyii - now that's encouraging news!  I hope that Sarah remains true to her values and does not promise what she can't deliver.  Leaders need to know and work for ALL the People - whether or not those people voted for or against them in the election.

Here in Illinois I have yet to see a winning candidate who doesn't spend hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars campaigning.  Illinois politicians seem to spend more money trashing their opponents than they do proposing ideas that will make life better for their consituents.

I know that this is unfortunately true in many other states as well.

So, good luck and I hope your Governor paves the way for honesty and caring government in the highest office in your state!

You're exactly right, Chef Jeff. But we used to say at the newspaper where I was employed, "A fish stinks from the head." It's true, "we the people" have the power, but "we the people" are falling down on the job. Too many of us fail to speak out frankly and fearlessly when we see our Constitution being trashed and our politicians taking us down the wrong road. Why aren't "we the people" outraged at what is happening today? Why do we refuse to take the obvious action required to bring back good government to the United States? Why do Americans continue to defend a political party gone awry? Our founders didn't put together the greatest Constitution in the world by being wimps! Where is the outrage? Where is the courage that is our heritage?

Thanks, Nate, you are right, of course, and I agree with William that We the People are not doing our job.  Neither are the people we elected to speak for us.  So those who are bold enough get away with not only (in my opinion) breaking the law are also rubbing our faces in it.

William, I believe that so many people are afraid that they will end up on some subversive list if they speak out too loudly.  That CNN reporter who ended up on the watch list is only one example of hundreds of thousands of Americans who are falsely & wrongly on that so-called Homeland Security list of subversives to keep an eye on.  If we can't get THIS right, then what chance is there for any of us?  Looks to me like we're back in the 'Tail Gunner Joe McCarthy' days of suspecting & accusing everyone.

Alas, others amongst us are just lazy and don't seem to care, as long as their favorite TV shows don't get cancelled. 

Believe me, if a network threatens to cancel "Merican Idle" or any of the popular so-called "Reality Shows" you'll see hundreds of thousands and possibly millions of angry letters & emails being sent.

We must have our bread and circuses, after all.

I can't support McCain or Obama. While I can't agree on everything the Libertarian Party stands for I have to say most of it makes "common sense" and supports the Constitution.

If enough of us vote for Barr, it will send a huge message to the Demo-idiots and the Republi-craps! :)

I say follow Constitution and most of our problems will be solved. Our forefathers came from where we are headed. They were smart enough to put it into law. But our servants prefer to take a 4 week vacation (at out expense)!

Joer4x4, there are many Americans who vote for neither Democrats nor Republicans. I wonder if a Parliamentarian system would serve us better, though? That way the smaller parties would get some seats, and people would not be so all-fired set on keeping the current 2-party system. Of course there are many who want to keep the current 2-party system.

I just believe that many Americans are disenfranchised if they don't go-along-to-get-along with the two major parties. Isn't there some way to include 3rd parties that garner a lot of votes, even if they are not enough to elect a president? I'm speaking mainly about Congress here.

Also, many 3rd parties only focus on the Big Prize - the White House. It's too bad that a new party couldn't get at least one person elected to the House or Senate, and then pick up steam from that.

So, vote for whoever you believe in the most, but it'll probably be Obama, which is OK by me. I could live with his agenda and I hope he doesn't let us down. If McCain gets in, I guess I could weather that as well, I just won't be as happy and I believe that the country will suffer under him.

Heck, maybe I should run? LOL!!!

Third parties will never be the answer, Chef Jeff. Next it'll be four parties, then five, then six. In fact, it's the trend away from two parties that is partly responsible for the mess we're in. What we need is people getting involved in the Democratic or Republican parties and seeing to it that they are not hijacked by people who don't believe in democracy at all. I've written several hubs on this issue because I believe it is very important. We'll always have a conflict between liberals and conservatives. The trick is for every citizen to be involved and active participants.

Hey, Lance, care to elaborate? There are many people out there who wanted McCain to win, but I wish someone else had received the Republican nod to run. Ron Paul certainly was very popular in my area of the country, and some wish Romney had run instead of McCain

Yes Jeff, you hit this one right on the head. I just think it is amazing on how these 2 parties despite each other, instead of working together. Its no wonder we are going the wrong direction.
